#SubiTo21

Hey there,

21. The year when your age in America finally opens doors that have been closed to you for so long. You can rent a car, book vacations, buy your own drinks (finally), change your driver’s license (we all know we don’t look the same as we did when we were 16) and you can order a glass of wine at dinner. 21. The beginning of a new era, an age to be reckoned with, the end of adolescence.

This year on July 5, 2016 I turned 21 years old. Since 19 I had made it my mission to be better, do more, give more, worry and complain less, to give myself room to grow, to learn from my mistakes and to give myself grace. So at 20 I went to France and I was free to do all of this and more; I had no more excuses. I made the most genuine friends in such a short amount of time and on my birthday they showed me a reflection of what I saw in them.

I woke up that morning refreshed and not feeling any different than I did the day before, but there was something in the air, and I couldn’t wait to figure it out. I went out to an appointment and then went window shopping in the shops downtown. In my Kente dress from Africa and my braids flowing, with no makeup on I truly felt like my best self. The sun was shining and nothing could take my joy. My dear friend then took me for a day of pampering- manicures and pedicures and gifted me with a candle for a day of self care; it couldn’t get better.

I went out for margaritas with my Haitian big sisters, and my newest friends whom I met in France took me out for dinner at this new Italian place in town called the Dolce Vita. The pasta is made in house and the bread is fresh out of the oven every hour; I was overwhelmed. (I really love bread.) The love and light that my friends showed me this day was a true showcase of friendship. I am the planner, the big picture taker, the dinner party hostess, the girl who always thinks out meticulous plans for the ones I love. This was the first time that I was on the receiving end of the spectrum. I cried several times. It’s rare that I find people who really know me the way that these guys do, and for such a short time. I was touched, humbled and I felt so loved.

I gave thanks for all of my friends and the impact they have had in my life over these few years that weekend and I hope they felt the love that I have for them in every moment. I can’t wait to see what year 21 will bring. I am ready to be vulnerable and let the Light in.

Why I love Fabletics

IMG_1392

Hey There!

First things first! Hello! It’s been a long time guys!! A lot has happened in my world, one of the biggest being that I am now writing for Curly Hair Magazine!!! As platform based in London, there are writers all over the world, and now I am one of them. This feels so good; now my work will be out there for everyone to see. What a feeling, what a life. Thank you for all the support of the blog and all my ventures. Stay tuned for more announcements. xoxo

Let’s talk athletic wear. Ever hear of Fabletics? From the moment Kate Hudson first launched Fabletics, I have been here. ⚡️Between leggings that always fit my long legs to the crop tops that hug my short torso just right, I know @fabletics is the one place I can always go to for the best quality and poppin collection of athletic (and leisure wear bc we all know these leggings will make more appearances at the mall!). It started off with a pair of leggings and a sport bra, and since then, Fabletics has been the only company that I  loyally buy athletic wear from. It’s a company that runs through subscription, so on the first of every month, the new prints and combinations are released and you have until the 5th of the month to either purchase something, or skip the month. The sets range from $49.95-$70 and I usually stick with the $50 option. Now, Don’t panic, because these clothes are excellent quality. I bought my first pair of leggings 5 years ago, and I still have it; every time I wash it it looks good as new!

My favorite thing about my Fabletics picks is that I feel good in them, and comfortable. This particular outfit is called “Guyana.” The top is “Kailey” and the leggings are the “Lisette” High- Waisted 7/8 Capri. My legs are long, and my torso is short, so I really like high waisted pants and the capris are just a plus. As you can see, I was out an about – not in the gym!! But the material felt great, I felt cool in the leggings even though this was a hot day. I really like the string-open back of the Kaile top the most. The top comes with a bra panel and removable cups so you can feel free with some coverage! Oh, and don’t worry, the back is adjustable.

Ahh, in a future life I’m a model commissioned for my long legs and full head of hair… Here’s to wishful thinking!  @katehudson if you’re ever looking for a high energy, natural curly haired girl who loves this brand, loves working out, and wants to bring a pop to your collections and shoots, you know where to find me🌻

Shop for all your comfortable athletic wear needs at Fabletics, ladies. When you sign up now, you get 2 pairs of The Best Leggings Ever for just $24!

This post is not affiliated, or sponsored by Fabletics in any way shape or form.

Nature’s Bounty Hair Skin & Nails Vitamin – Argan Oil Infused : Product Review

Hey there!

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted; I’m trying to enjoy the summer! Sometimes you just have to take a break, you know? Anyway, I’m back with another product review! So far I’ve stuck to natural hair products, and I haven’t had any complaints save for minor ones. I just wanted to warn and assure you guys that I’m being completely honest in all of my reviews, so sometimes the review mighty not be great news, but it’s important to have good and bad experiences so you guys know ahead of time!! That being said, let’s get to it!

Recently, there has been a lot of hype in the Influenster world about the Hair Skin & Nails Vitamins from Nature’s Bounty, you might recognize the brand from pink packaging and pink gummies. My friend took them, she had no complaints. Nature’s Bounty has a pill version. This one is extra strength, so I figured, hey, let me try it, right? I purchased the 120 count for about $9 from Walmart.

Disclaimer: I already read reviews on this product and heard some shifty things but pushed it aside because everyone’s reaction to a product is going to be different, and I don’t have any known allergies.

The instructions say to take 3 vitamins per day, preferably with meals. Guys. I took the product for 5 days. My nails were growing within the first 2 days, and by day 5 my face started to flare up with acne. This is what I looked like on day 5:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Based on my pictures from previous posts, you guys know that my face is always pretty clear. This acne did not seem regular at all. I can only describe it as an allergic reaction; it was not fun. I definitely was not expecting a change this… sudden. I sprung into action and contacted the Nature’s Bounty Twitter page and sent them photos and let them know that I had a reaction to the product and did not have a good experience. They responded and asked me to call them the next day to speak with me directly, and provided me with a number. The next morning I made the call and the representative that answered was kind and she apologized for my experience. I gave her some information and within 5 minutes she emailed me a pre-paid postage label to return the product and would send me a refund. Yay for great customer service!!

What have I learned? Well. I probably will not be taking a risk like that ever again. It’s been 3 days since I stopped taking the vitamin and I’m still breaking out, though it’s gotten less severe. I’m flushing my system with water and continuing to eat clean in hopes that this will disappear before the middle of June. I will say that all this does not go to say that the product does no work. Some people have tried it and their skin actually cleared up! Which makes me think that there may be some reverse science here… just kidding but seriously why me!!

8 days after stopping the vitamins + tons of water.

Anyway guys, cheers to good customer service, learning lessons, and drinking more water (even if it is in  a desperate attempt to get rid of acne.) Acne is not a bad thing, and it doesn’t make you less beautiful; it just means you might have to fight your skin a little more and that makes you strong! There’s still a little bit of breakout but thanks be to a head of hair that cover impurities!

Wishing you good vibes and light always.

Sincerely,

Subi

Drugstore Dream : Tresemme Keratin Smooth Review

Hi there everyone!

If you don’t know already, I am an Influenster, which means that I do product reviews for different things ranging from clothing brands, beauty products, and food. As I release reviews, the company matches me up with boxes for products that give me a new opportunity to try new products. All thoughts are my own.

This month, I got the opportunity to try the new Tresemmé Keratin Smooth shampoo and conditioner for free. This particular box was sponsored by Tresemmé, Kroger (a supermarket based in the south USA), and Influenster. Both the shampoo and conditioner were full-sized, and came in this fun box, I love how they always put wrapping paper around the products! Makes it feel like a gift! Here’s what the packaging looked like:

IMG_0314                               IMG_0317

If you guys like what you hear about the products, I’ve inserted hyperlinks all though the post so you can buy it and try it for yourself!

So, the Keratin Smooth line is a 5 benefit in 1 system deal: anti frizz, perfectly detangles (according to the bottle), silky shine, soft feel, and tames fly aways. Now as a natural curly girl, you guys know I’m always looking for any product that makes wash day easier. Before I got on the natural product wave, I did use Tresmmé during wash days to shampoo, but had since eliminated it because the sulfate in it was drying out my hair. After that I stayed way clear of Tresemmé, but decided to give it another shot. Because the bottles say that they smooth hair and I had heard horror a few horror stories before of curly girls getting keratin protein treatments and coming out with straight hair, I was apprehensive, but these products proved me wrong.

IMG_0320Shampoo: The shampoo was definitely shocking. This was the first time I had used a shampoo that wasn’t from a natural brand and liked what I saw. My hair was loving the feeling of that keratin protein treatment, it was shiny after one wash and seemed like it had a healthy bounce to it. My hair seemed manageable.  You can find this shampoo at any drugstore, Kroger or Walmart for less than $5!

Conditioner: Wow. I mean, just when I thought that the shampoo was a surprise, in comes the conditioner making magic! It definitely left my hair feeling soft and smooth, and the shine was clear to see. So remember when I said that it “perfectly detangles?” Guys, this claim was no joke. I mean, how is it that my hair retained curl-tension (coining thattt) and my fingers ran through my hair as easy as it did? The researchers at Tresemmé need to let me know how they did it, because YAS I am here for it! Honestly and truly, if you’re balling on a budget and just need something quick to do a co-wash head to a drugstore, Kroger or your nearest Walmart and pick up this conditioner, especially if it’s less than $5!!

Final Thoughts: I’m glad that Tresemmé came out with a shampoo and conditioner that allowed me to immediately see the results that it claims after the first wash and not a week or two later! HeeHee you guys know what I mean! A big big thank you again to Influenster for choosing me for this box, and I am really looking forward to the next review!

You are your Greatest Adventure

Dear Reader,

There is no time like now, today, in these moments. And that is why it’s called the present. ~ Some Wise Person

As a young adult in America, you see so many new ads, trends, the new hype of fashion and the aesthetic of not caring about the world and living in the moment. It get’s to be a little overwhelming, don’t you think? These all-natural diets that claim to make you feel good inside and more alive (been there done that), let m put it this way: all the bs gets old. But as a young adult in America in this day in age, you have the opportunity to do what our parents may have not been able to do: Look for the real you.

First things first, you need to really stop and think. This is big step, finding you, it’s going to be a little hard, hey, and maybe it’ll be easy! You up for this?

Make a promise to yourself: When the going get’s rough, you’ll look in the mirror and say, “Hey there gorgeous/handsome. You can do this.” Make a list of all the things you’ve always wanted to do just to get you started. Here are some of mine:

  • Go hiking
    • If you’re not the adventuring type, this might just be the thing for you! Now hear me out, hiking doesn’t mean you need to scale up Kilimanjaro tomorrow, but find a nature trail near you, get some good sneakers and some comfortable clothes. Leave your phone off. Or on do not disturb. You’d be surprised how much time you have to think when you’re not snap chatting your nature walk or sending videos of the cool bird you found or the sunset in the woods.

Hiking-Trail

  • Swim in a clear ocean
    • You know what that means! T R A V E L. Save up and go to that place and getaway just like you always wanted to. Yow that’ll love it, I promise. I’m taking my own advice and doing that soon!!! (Another post to come)
    • And if you’re afraid of the ocean (some people are) find a natural spring, maybe a national park, and swim there. Still good.

420ff2c99c8d403d11d608a5b452cc6a

  • Fly a kite
    • Let’s be real I just thought of this one, but now that I think about it. hey, why not! I’ve never done it before. It looks like fun!!
  • Go to an art museum… and really look at the art
    • This past week, I went to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia. Now it’s not the Louvre or the Guggenheim, but man it was fun! Three floors of art, one space, winding staircases and the light, don’t get me started on the amazing sunlight all throughout the building. (Not to mention the selfie lighting! Ladies you know what I mean)

High-FastForward2

  • Read all the books you’ve wondered about (make that list)
    • I used to read all the time. When I got to college I “didn’t have time anymore” but you make time for the things you want to do so I’m going to do just that. Starting with Ana Karenina.
  • Eat new foods (another list)
    • Try new restaurants… alone
    • Ethnic food is always a  y e s. Do it.
  • Find a new favorite food
    • Right now mine is shrimp, I can make it into anything.
    • When I tried sushi for the first time I found a new favorite fish – yellowtail. But I only like it raw and classic sushi which is interesting!

  • Pray more
    • Believe in something. The Bible and the Quran are holy books there is so much to learn, so much knowledge. And even if you decide not to convert, prayer is soothing and it helps sort out all the gunk in life. There is this calm that passes over you, and this feeling of… completion. Try it, let me know what you think, just throwing it out there.

Always remember that you owe it to yourself to find out who you really are. This journey is going to change your life and you’re almost there! Last piece of advice: trust you. You got this. And even if you don’t you will eventually. There’s no rush on the creative process and you are your greatest masterpiece.
