FRODAY ATL: Self Love, Hair Tings & Good Vibes

This past month, was privileged enough to experience real magic. Whenever I talk natural hair or the accomplishments of my friends,  #BlackGirlMagic I feel truly empowered. There was a room of girls, with natural hair. Beauty was all around me coming from every directions, shining through all the cracks and spaces between the plants. It was #FroDayATL .

There she is! Miss Frogirl, Niá! I see Dominique, Kii, Helen, Lydia, and Diamond in the back!

Froday was created by Niá Pettitt, aka @frogirlginny on Instagram, aka Niá the Light. She created #FroDay as a platform to encourage and inspire women to be their best selves and embrace the most natural and raw parts of them. It started out with hair — now Niá is on a quest to use her platform for something bigger, and that was clear when FroDayATL started. Sponsored by DevaCurl, Niá toured the U.S for this trip and made Atlanta a stop, it was meant to be!

Diamond telling us a little about herself.

FroDayATL was hosted at Loca Luna– a premiere tapas restaurant and lounge in Atlanta. We all walked in, and there were gift bags by everyone’s seats with products from DevaCurl. These products are super expensive so I was grateful for the chance to try even 2 of them! In true Haitian fashion, I showed up late, but all was well because everyone was just settling in. I don’t want to ruin it for anyone because where is the fun in spoilers? The funny thing about all of this is that as we were looking around the room it was clear that some of us recognized each other from Instagram so it was funny to recognize and make introductions in person. We all stood up and said why we were there, our names and a quality we liked best about ourselves. I said that I liked my determination and drive. One girl in the room said that she liked something physical about herself the most– her eyebrows, but everyone else mentioned character traits. When Niá bought it to our attention, the room fell silent, and there were scattered chuckles. I think as young women growing up we are taught not to be vain, and this can hold us back from loving all parts of ourselves, what is inside and out.

And so, Niá challenged us to love and embrace all of it– the good, the bad, the ugly. To own our insecurities and work toward throwing them away, and to love our flaws. For me it was my skin– since stopping Proactiv +, a horrible acne drug, my face has been raging with acne. I haven’t felt confident, I hide from the camera, but most of all, I hide. But in that room, with all of us together, young women and grown, I didn’t have to hide. I made friends that I still am in contact with today, and my community of curl friends has grown immensely. We took pictures, and laughed, connected and we all shined together. It was an amazing end to the summer and the beginning of my senior year of University-I won’t too soon forget.

The girls and I — we connected. Over the simplest thing, hair, and it should always be that simple, that organic. Some of their spirits, I could feel them, and those ladies I am still connected with today. The event lasted all of 3 hours and I found myself eager to make plans and see these girls again, to be around them again, so we could all be in that feel-good energy that came so easily to us that day. These curl friends will last a long time.

This gem’s name is Sterling and she is amazing. My definite soul sister- she had just big-chopped the week before!

Thank you to DevaCurl for sponsoring this wonderful event and a big thank you to Niá, who I call a friend. She thinks Cancers are crazy, but  she can’t get rid of me now! My Gemini sister, and friend, I hope to see you back in ATL soon, but until then– Happy FroDay everyone!! I challenge you guys to embrace you– all parts, the good, the bad, the ugly, your insecurities and strengths. All of you.

Drugstore Dream : Tresemme Keratin Smooth Review

Hi there everyone!

If you don’t know already, I am an Influenster, which means that I do product reviews for different things ranging from clothing brands, beauty products, and food. As I release reviews, the company matches me up with boxes for products that give me a new opportunity to try new products. All thoughts are my own.

This month, I got the opportunity to try the new Tresemmé Keratin Smooth shampoo and conditioner for free. This particular box was sponsored by Tresemmé, Kroger (a supermarket based in the south USA), and Influenster. Both the shampoo and conditioner were full-sized, and came in this fun box, I love how they always put wrapping paper around the products! Makes it feel like a gift! Here’s what the packaging looked like:

If you guys like what you hear about the products, I’ve inserted hyperlinks all though the post so you can buy it and try it for yourself!

So, the Keratin Smooth line is a 5 benefit in 1 system deal: anti frizz, perfectly detangles (according to the bottle), silky shine, soft feel, and tames fly aways. Now as a natural curly girl, you guys know I’m always looking for any product that makes wash day easier. Before I got on the natural product wave, I did use Tresmmé during wash days to shampoo, but had since eliminated it because the sulfate in it was drying out my hair. After that I stayed way clear of Tresemmé, but decided to give it another shot. Because the bottles say that they smooth hair and I had heard horror a few horror stories before of curly girls getting keratin protein treatments and coming out with straight hair, I was apprehensive, but these products proved me wrong.

IMG_0320Shampoo: The shampoo was definitely shocking. This was the first time I had used a shampoo that wasn’t from a natural brand and liked what I saw. My hair was loving the feeling of that keratin protein treatment, it was shiny after one wash and seemed like it had a healthy bounce to it. My hair seemed manageable.  You can find this shampoo at any drugstore, Kroger or Walmart for less than $5!

Conditioner: Wow. I mean, just when I thought that the shampoo was a surprise, in comes the conditioner making magic! It definitely left my hair feeling soft and smooth, and the shine was clear to see. So remember when I said that it “perfectly detangles?” Guys, this claim was no joke. I mean, how is it that my hair retained curl-tension (coining thattt) and my fingers ran through my hair as easy as it did? The researchers at Tresemmé need to let me know how they did it, because YAS I am here for it! Honestly and truly, if you’re balling on a budget and just need something quick to do a co-wash head to a drugstore, Kroger or your nearest Walmart and pick up this conditioner, especially if it’s less than $5!!

Final Thoughts: I’m glad that Tresemmé came out with a shampoo and conditioner that allowed me to immediately see the results that it claims after the first wash and not a week or two later! HeeHee you guys know what I mean! A big big thank you again to Influenster for choosing me for this box, and I am really looking forward to the next review!

Product Review: L’Oreal Extraordinary Clay

When you get a free product in the mail to try you hope and hope for good results and to like it enough to add it into your life. Read more to see my thoughts on the new L’oréal Extraordinary Clay products I received complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes!!

Hello there!! I love trying new products and suggesting things for my friends to try to make them fall in love with products I like, so I became an Influenster. It’s an amazing site where you submit reviews of products and try to influence others to buy them. You receive the products free/complimentary to test and all you have to do is post about it! Click the link if you’d like to do the same and let me know what you think!

This time, Influenster gave me the opportunity to try a new product line from L’Oréal hair: Extraordinary Clay. Disclaimer: I got these products complimentary and all opinions are my own.

As a natural haired girl, I was hesitant when Influenster sent me this product because it seemed pretty regular, just your average products. It says it’s for oily roots and dry ends to clarify and hydrate. Now, if anyone knows me, I loooove moisture, so for a product to say that targets oily anything, I’m on hyper-alert. As a natural haired girl, I know my hair carries oils that my hair needs to thrive, but if a product that isn’t designed to protect those oils is introduced to my hair, things will not go well! But these products were complimentary and I have tons of tricks up my sleeve to fix any hair problem, so I dove in!

img_9872

Step 1: This was the pre-poo (a familiar term for us naturals) of the new Extraordinary Clay line from L’oréal! I loved it because it cleansed the scalp and was super creamy. It says to keep it on for 5 minutes, and apply only to the roots, but I kept it on for about 15 minutes because I know my roots had product buildup this wash-day. It didn’t dry my roots at all! My hair felt really healthy, my curls were still poppin and all the dirt and grime from previously used products were washed away. This was my favorite step in the new product line for sure. If you’re looking for a product to clear your roots and have this in hand, go for it.
img_9873
Step 2: Shampoo. This is your average drugstore shampoo, there was nothing special about it at all. It reminded me why I stopped using any old product off of the shelf. I hated this shampoo for 3 reasons. 1. It stripped my hair of ALL oil and I could feel the difference immediately. Which is what the product is supposed to do, so technically I shouldn’t be mad. 2. The way my hair felt after I used this shampoo was just horrible. It felt like rubber, limp and lifeless. My hair had lost all of it’s elasticity and shine. 3. My curl pattern was lost completely. My hair at this point was in dire need of a deep conditioning treatment and I was so taken aback at the sudden change.

img_9875

Step 3: Conditioner. Well, at this point I was trying to save my hair so I packed that shampoo onto my hair like my life depended on it! It’s your regular conditioner, nothing special. It had tons of slip and got the job done, but I was waiting for that wow factor that conditioners get in order to make me love it.. That never happened, but my hair did feel a little better.

Side Note: I followed this routine with my Mielle Organics products to save the day!

Overall: After all of the steps were used, my hair felt clean, yes but at what cost? 3/10 do not recommend to any natural haired beauties out there. As a girl with 4b curls hydration is essential, and this product line, just wasn’t for me. The first step was the best step for all the reasons I stated but mostly because it was the most hydrating. If you plan on buying anything in this line, the first step, the clay hair mask is the one to go with! I apologize for the lack of a personal picture of my hair; next time I won’t forget! If you have any questions about the line, or have any questions for me, comment, send me an email or follow me on any of my social media platforms and contact me there. Thanks for reading guys! More product reviews to come for sure!

Sincerely,

Subi
